Lightning Overview

Q: What is Lightning?
A: Lightning is:
  • Experience: Modern user interface optimized for speed
  • App Builder: A drag and drop technology for fast and easy app building & customizations
  • AppExchange for Components: Leverage over 50 partner components in the App Builder
  • Design System: Style guides and modern enterprise UX best practices to build pixel perfect apps

Q: What is Lightning Experience?
A: Lightning Experience is the name for the all new Salesforce desktop app, with over 25 new features, built with a modern user interface and optimized for speed.
Q: What is Salesforce Classic?
A: Salesforce Classic is the name for the original Salesforce UI and app design. Once Lightning Experience is enabled, you can toggle between the Salesforce Classic UI and the Lightning Experience UI. See the question below about switching between the Lightning UI and Classic UI for more details.
Q: How much does Lightning Experience cost?
A: The Lightning Experience will be available to existing customers and net new prospects at no additional cost. The Lightning Experience is available for Sales Cloud, Service Cloud and any platform license for all Editions: GE (existing), PE, EE, UE and PXE. Customers will have the ability to determine when and for whom they want to enable the new user interface (UI).
Q: When will this be available?
A: Lightning Experience will be generally available (GA) in Winter ‘16. Lightning Experience will be automatically available to be turned on by an admin in all GE+ orgs in Winter ‘16 except Content Management Edition (CME) orgs and orgs with person accounts enabled. Contact your Salesforce rep for more information about what to do for CME orgs and orgs with Person Accounts.
Q: Does Lightning Experience have to be rolled out to the entire org?
A: No. Admins first enable Lightning Experience for the entire org, and then they can choose to roll it out to only certain users by using profiles or permission sets.
Q: What are the supported browsers for Lightning Experience?
A: Lightning Experience is supported with Microsoft® Internet Explorer® version 11, Apple® Safari® version 8.x on Mac OS X, and the most recent stable versions of Mozilla® Firefox® and Google Chrome™. If you’re using Microsoft® Internet Explorer® versions 7–10, you’re redirected to Salesforce Classic. The following limitations apply. You can’t access Lightning Experience in a mobile browser. Instead, we recommend using the Salesforce1 app when you’re working on a mobile device.

Enablement

Q: Is there a pilot program for Lightning Experience?
A: There will not be a pilot program for Lightning Experience. If you want to request access for a Lightning Experience enabled pre-release org prior to the Winter '16 release, you can request access here. Priority will be given to users who complete more Lightning Experience Trailhead modules. Refer to the question below on trying out Lightning Experience to navigate to those modules!
Q: I heard there was a Global Broadcast with a preview and demos, can I see the recording of the Broadcast?
A: There was a Global Broadcast on August 25, 2015 at 4 pm PT presented by key executives at Salesforce debuting the product and running through technical demos. You can find the recording of that broadcast here.
Q: How can I try out Lightning Experience?
A: In addition to signing up to get a pre-release org at the “Meet the New Salesforce” global broadcast (see above for details), there are several ways you can try the Lightning Experience starting with the Winter ‘16 release.
  • Existing customers with sandboxes can access the Lightning Experience trial in their sandbox
  • Existing customers without sandboxes can enable the Lightning Experience trial to a specific user(s). It is recommended that admins enable a profile perm for their own profile and try it before enabling trials for others. Reference the Lightning Experience Trailhead Trails to learn how to enable permissions for their edition.
  • For prospective customers who want a trial: After Winter ‘16 is released, all new trials will be in the new Lightning Experience.
  • For prospective customers who don’t want a trial: Lightning Desktop will be enabled by default.
Note that Service Cloud trials will not have Lightning Desktop enabled by default but will be able to enable it in the set up.</br>
Q: How can I migrate to Lightning Experience?
A: You will have the ability to try out the new Lightning Experience in August and when Winter ‘16 is released as noted above. The new Lightning Experience trails are now live in Trailhead, and are a great source of information to start. Choose the trail most relevant to your needs:
These trails provide technical documentation, sample rollout guides, feature comparisons including between Lightning Components and Visualforce, and more. We are also working with Accelerators to enable the migration process.
Q: Does Lightning Experience support Visualforce?
A: Yes, with some detailed caveats. When a Visualforce page is viewed in Lightning Experience, it will still have the Classic UI. You might want to update the UI to match that of the Lightning UI to be consistent. The Lightning Design System makes this possible. For this reason, VF is in beta for Winter ‘16.
You will no longer have the option to hide the header or sidebar. The Salesforce Classic header and sidebar will always be suppressed in Lightning Experience. The Lightning Experience header and left nav menu will always show. No code changes are required for this behavior. Viewing the VF page in Salesforce Classic will behave the same as it does today.
We recommend that as you add more UI customization, you consider whether to create it using Lightning Components or Visualforce pages. Lightning is optimized to work on mobile and tablet devices and in the new Lightning Desktop experience. It does not, however, fit into the Salesforce Classic experience at this time. If you want to build something that needs to work in Salesforce Classic, you must build it with VF today. If you want to build something that only needs to work in mobile or in Lightning Desktop, you can build it in Lightning.
For more detailed information on Visualforce and/or Lightning Components within Lightning Experience, please refer to the Lightning Experience developer trail.
Q: Can I still use Salesforce Classic?
A: You have the choice of when you want to move to the new Lightning Experience UI and which users you want to migrate. You can continue to use Salesforce Classic as long as you like, and we will continue to support the Classic UI.
Q: What is the experience switching between the Salesforce Classic UI and the Lightning Experience UI?
A: Users for whom Lightning Experience is enabled will be able to use the Switcher feature, located in the upper-right side of all pages, to toggle between the user experiences to access pages as necessary. The attributes (like field order and field-level security) will be the same in the two UIs. Please note that switching UIs also affects URL routing.
When Lightning Experience is selected, clicking bookmarks and email notifications will take you to the Lightning version of the pages, where possible. When Salesforce Classic is selected, clicking those same links will take you to the Classic UI version of the page. Also if a Lightning Experience user sends a link (Chatter post or email) to a Salesforce Classic-only user, the page will not be found. Salesforce Classic links are interpreted for routing to the Lightning Experience UI, but not the other way around.
Q: How does Lightning Experience work with Salesforce1 mobile?
A: Salesforce1 (S1) is already built on the Lightning Platform and will not change in Winter ‘16. As a matter of fact, the S1 mobile experience inspired many pages and experiences in the new Lightning Experience.
Q: Are custom objects supported in Lightning Experience?
A: Yes. The use of existing custom objects and creation of new custom objects both are supported. Custom objects will not appear in the navigation (left nav) in the first release but can be accessed by other methods including the App Launcher and via related lists on standard objects.
Check out the Migrating to Lightning Experience Admin Trail to learn more about navigation, the App Launcher, and the new Object Manager for working with new and existing custom objects.
Q: Is the Setup page different in Lightning Experience?
A: The Setup pages have a new look and feel but the functionality will be the same. The setup tree has been reorganized, and in the first release only the nodes that are related to customizing the new Lightning Experience are in there (so most of the Service Cloud related nodes are gone, and some Sales Cloud features too). From a customization standpoint, all of tools are still in Setup.
As for additions, the Create menu in the upper right corner (appears on every page) to help you create common data without having to drill into the tree. Finally, one of the biggest changes in process is the Object Manager, where all objects (standard and custom) have a setup detail page in one unified list. Of course, you can always use the ‘Quick Find’ above the setup tree to find what you are looking for.
Check out the Migrating to Lightning Experience Admin Trail to learn more about the new Setup UI.
Q: Is Chatter now referred to as Collaborate?
A: Yes. The Chatter feed is part of the activity workspace in the new Lightning Experience and is referred to as Collaborate. We have an activity feed and case feed as well.
Q: Do the reports and dashboards in Lightning Experience use Wave Analytics?
A: Lightning reports and dashboards use Wave Analytics charting to give them a new, modern look and feel. However, the reports and dashboards do not leverage the Wave reporting engine. The query engine has not changed.
Q: How does Lightning Experience affect AppExchange apps?
A: We've asked each partner to get ready for the new Lightning Experience. As part of that, they will be testing out their apps in the Lightning Experience and making changes to match functionality and look & feel. When done, their apps will be marked as Lightning Ready on the AppExchange.
To get your app Lightning Ready, check out this page on the Partner Community for more details.
Q: How does this work with the Salesforce Console for Sales/Service?
A: The Salesforce Console is not supported in the initial version of the Lightning Experience (Winter ‘16 release) but is on the roadmap. Console is still supported in the Salesforce Classic UI and accessible in Lightning Experience using the App Launcher. When selecting Salesforce Console via the App Launcher, the user will go back into Salesforce Classic UI. The Salesforce Console has undergone some UI enhancements for 198 that will give the appearance of a more modern UI and contain some Lightning style elements.
